NREPA Has Record Number of New Supporters in Congress

There is some good news coming out of D.C. The Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (NREPA) is the legislative realization of AWR's vision: bioregion-wide protection of the wildlands of the Northern Rockies. NREPA was introduced by Representatives Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) in the 108th Congress. The wildest bill on the hill continues to gain support on the hill.

Thanks to the environment's best lobbyist, Carole King, NREPA has a record number of cosponsors, 173 at press time. NREPA will protect 20 million acres of roadless land as wilderness in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, eastern Washington and eastern Oregon. NREPA will save taxpayers $245 million dollars over the next ten years by prohibiting logging and road building in roadless areas designated as wilderness. In addition to protecting wildlands and saving taxpayers money, NREPA will create 2,300 high paying jobs in wildlands restoration for the region. The Forest Service has found that water originating from lands that would be protected under NREPA, has a value of at least one billion dollars. It makes no sense to lose hundreds of millions of dollars on logging, which harms the most valuable commodity that our forests produce, clean water. NREPA will protect the environment, create jobs and save taxpayers money.
